February 2, 2023

The outbreak of gastrointestinal illness at Tanaka Elementary School in southwest Las Vegas is a cause for concern among parents and guardians of the affected students. According to the Southern Nevada Health District, they are actively investigating the cause of the illnesses reported by several students. Meanwhile, the Clark County School District Health Services Department is working with the health district to take steps to prevent further sickness.

While it is not yet known how many students have been affected, the most common symptoms of gastrointestinal viruses include nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and possible fever, headache, and body aches. These viruses are common and easily spread from person-to-person. As such, it is important for students, staff, and visitors to take precautions such as washing their hands regularly and thoroughly to prevent illness.

School officials have advised students who are experiencing symptoms of gastrointestinal illness to stay home for at least 48 hours after their symptoms have stopped. If symptoms persist, they are advised to seek care from a licensed healthcare provider. Furthermore, any hard, non-porous surface that has been contaminated by a sick person should be cleaned and disinfected immediately with a chlorine bleach solution to prevent further spread of the illness.

In light of this outbreak, parents and guardians are encouraged to keep a close eye on their children's health and seek medical attention if necessary. Regular hand washing and avoiding close contact with sick individuals can also help prevent the spread of the illness.
